SOMERSET, N.J. – Freshman Matt Diehl (Towson, Md.) and senior Chris Coppolecchia (Somers, N.Y.) of the Quinnipiac University men's lacrosse team were awarded weekly honors by the Northeast Conference, announced on Monday, April 2, 2012 by the league office. Diehl earned his first career NEC Player/Rookie of the Week accolade, while Coppolecchia was tabbed the NEC Defensive Player of the Week.
"I am very proud of the entire team's play this weekend," said Head Coach Eric Fekete. "Both Matt and Chris were tremendous players and leaders. Matt was a dynamic player with outstanding intelligence and anticipation. Chris set the tone on the defensive side. His experience and poise under pressure make us a much stronger team and his game was excellent Saturday."
Matt Diehl scored five goals, including the game-winner, and totaled six points as the Bobcats topped defending league champion and preseason favorite Mount St. Mary's, 12-8, in a rematch of last year's title game. This week's NEC Offensive Player of the Week and Co-Rookie of the Week, Diehl marked career-highs in both goals and points in the victory. More importantly, though, four of his five goals came in the second half and helped QU pull away for the win. He has now scored at least one goal and tallied two or more points in his last four games, a stretch in which the Bobcats have gone 2-2 as a team.
Diehl leads the team in assists with 12, a number that has him tied for second in the Northeast Conference. In addition, he now sits fourth on the team in goals scored with eight.
Chris Coppolecchia caused five turnovers and scooped up eight ground balls in the road victory in Emmitsburg, Md. last weekend. In the NEC opener, the Somers, NY product played a major role on the defensive front, holding the Mount to nearly two goals below its season scoring average and producing four of his five takeaways in the second half. Thanks to his performance, Coppolecchia now owns the league lead in caused turnovers with 21. Coppolecchia also ranks third amongst the entire NCAA Division I field as well
Stanwick tied a career high with eight points; Keenan helped UNC defeat No. 1 Johns Hopkins.
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia senior attackman Steele Stanwick and North Carolina sophomore midfielder R.G. Keenan have been named the ACC Men's Lacrosse Players of the Week, announced by the conference office on Tuesday. It is the fourth weekly award this season for Keenan and the second for Stanwick.
Stanwick tied a career high with eight points to lead Virginia to a conference win at No. 9 Maryland. With the Cavaliers down two goals late in the third quarter, Stanwick jumpstarted a 7-1 Virginia run that spelled the difference. The Baltimore, Md., native tallied three goals and two assists during the run, including what proved to the game-winning goal. He also picked up a team-high five ground balls, including crucial ones late in the game.
Keenan was named the Most Valuable Player of the Konica Minolta Big City Classic game between North Carolina and No. 1 Johns Hopkins. The Perry Hall, Md., native won 18-of-25 faceoffs and scooped up a game-high nine ground balls in the match. He won 11-of-14 faceoffs in the first half as the Tar Heels built an 8-4 halftime advantage, and scored his second goal of the season in the second quarter. The nine ground balls were his second highest total this season, and his work on faceoffs helped the Tar Heels control possession en route to their first win over a top-ranked team since April 6, 1996.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- A double-digit save performance paced UMBC men's lacrosse to a win on Sunday and earned junior Adam Cohen America East Player of the Week accolades. Hartford's Kevin O'Shea racked up his second straight three-point game to earn Rookie of the Week honors for the second time in as many weeks. The awards for the week ending Feb. 26 were announced Monday afternoon.
Cohen (Arnold, Md.) made 14 saves to lead UMBC to an 11-7 win at Rutgers Sunday. The junior goalkeeper made seven of his stops in the final quarter and took on of them the length of the field for a goal. The score is believed to be first goal scored by a Retriever netminder in program history.
STANWICK - JOINS ELITE 100 -100 CLUB!
Stanwick (CRABS 2008 team) scored two goals and dished out three assists to become the third Cavalier, the seventh player in the ACC and the 44th player in the nation all-time to register 100 career goals and 100 career assists. He joins Kevin Pehlke (1990-93) and Danny Glading (2006-09) as the other Cavaliers in the club.
"It's one of the joys of my job that I get to work with young men like Steele Stanwick," said Starsia. "He's a really special kid, on and off the field. It happens to be that he's a great lacrosse player, but he's also a great guy. I've been blessed with a long career filled with good guys, but Steele is on the short list of the very best guys I've ever been around.
"His game is just so balanced, but his greatest skill is that he makes the people around him better. For an offensive playmaker, that's important. We work well on offense because of Steele Stanwick. Players know that if they move smartly and in a meaningful way, they know they'll get the ball back in a better spot. He's our trigger, and our offense is in good hands."

Virginia's Stanwick, Northwestern's Smith win Tewaaraton Award
Loyola grad named nation's top college player after leading Cavs to national title
By Edward Lee and Katherine Dunn, The Baltimore Sun
12:09 AM EDT, June 3, 2011
Three days after powering Virginia to the program's fourth NCAA championship, junior attackman Steele Stanwick was recognized for his effort by taking home the Tewaaraton Award, given to the nation's top college player.
On the women's side, Northwestern attacker Shannon Smith won after leading the Wildcats to an upset 8-7 victory over No. 1 Maryland for their sixth championship in seven years.
Stanwick, a Baltimore native and Loyola graduate, outlasted Cornell junior attackman Rob Pannell, Army senior attackman Jeremy Boltus and Syracuse senior goalkeeper John Galloway and senior long-stick midfielder Joel White for the award.
Stanwick registered 21 points in leading the Cavaliers to their first national championship since 2006. He finished the season ranked third in Division I in assists (38) and fourth in points per game (4.1).
Stanwick's numbers weren't quite as good as those of Pannell's (first in the country in points with 89, assists with 47 and points per game with 5.2), but the Big Red fell to Virginia in the NCAA tournament quarterfinals.
Hofstra midfielder Doug Shanahan is the only player in the award's 11-year history to claim the honor after his team failed to reach the national final.
Stanwick has a chance to join Syracuse attackman Michael Powell as the only two-time Tewaaraton winner. Powell won the award in 2002 and 2004.
Smith, a junior from Long Island, was named Most Valuable Player of the NCAA tournament after scoring four goals, including the game-winner, in the title game, and her 18 goals in the four tournament games rank as the second-most all-time for a single tournament.
Smith, who finished the season as the nation's leading scorer with 86 goals and 42 assists, gives Northwestern its fifth Tewaaraton in six years. She is the third Wildcat to win the trophy after Kristen Kjellman in 2006 and 2007, and Hannah Nielsen in 2008 and 2009. Maryland's Caitlyn McFadden won last year after the Terrapins beat Northwestern in the title game.
Maryland had two Tewaaraton finalists this year in Sarah Mollison and Century graduate Katie Schwarzmann along with Loyola's Grace Gavin, a St. Paul's graduate, and Duke's Emma Hamm.
