Former CRAB Paul Rabil looking to feed @ The VAIL Shootout!

The Baltimore Lacrosse Club, Inc is a 501-C-3 state registered non profit. It is our goal to provide an exceptional lacrosse experience. We will field one team per age group and provide top notch coaching for that team. Our mission is simple: to provide our players with the opportunity to compete in lacrosse tournaments held throughout the country during the summer and fall. Many of these tournaments exist to showcase our players to college coaches. These tournaments also have divisions for younger high school and middle school teams. Experienced and proven coaching is the cornerstone of the BLC.  Lifelong friendships between players and parents from the many different schools and communities from which our teams are comprised is an added benefit of the club experience!

teamates become friends become family with crabs!
Dear Player and Parents,

Today was a beautiful day for lacrosse and we saw a lot of very good things on the field from the boys. After tryouts the coaches met and went over each player to discuss where that player might fit into the team structure. We struggled with the final few evaluations and have decided to have the following players back next weekend Sunday Sept. 14th 3:30pm to 5:30pm for a final evaluation.

Registration will be open next Sunday evening. Winter indoor will start at FastBreaklax in late October. We will need with your registration next week your measured helmet size for the new Cascade 7 Pro as well as shoe size (anticipated size come spring 2009) for the UA cleats as well as short and shirt size for our UA apparel.

Players are listed in random order:

This weekend at UVA many of our 2010's plus some of our 2011's as well as a few invited players traveled to Charlottesville for an Invitational Team camp. The UVA coaches actually broke down one of our games using Gamebreaker software and reviewed it with our players just like they would with their own team. Definately a great experience.
The guys went 6-0 in the event with a big 11-7 win over an Unbeaten all summer L I Express team! The coaches were really proud of how hard the guys played!

In PA our U15 Hardshell team went undefeated winning the Patriot games in our first visit to the event! Coach Alderman
said the guys played hard and had a good time!

That is a wrap for the summer 2008 season! We will be sending out a letter to all club members soon about next year.
I know all the coaches had fun and wish all the guys the very best as they enjoy the rest of the summer and prepare for another year of school!

2008 Vail Lacrosse Shootout

HS Boys Champions

Congrats to the Under 19 Crabs for winning their 3rd Vail Shootout in a row! They won 13-6 yesterday on the beautiful Ford field in Vail CO over Colorado Select. Colorado Select was a surprise finalist defeating Team OHIO in their semifinal. More on this:

(Theo Stroomer/Vail Daily)

VAIL, Colorado — The familiar chant started as the final seconds wound down Wednesday. It continued as the Baltimore team posed for a team picture with every family member seemingly present with a camera.

And it erupted again when the Baltimore players accepted the championship trophy at Ford Park.

“Crabs, Crabs, Crabs.”

Each year, it’s new cast of characters in Baltimore blue and gold, and for the third year in a row, the Crabs locked their claws onto a boys high school Vail Lacrosse Shootout title. Tuesday, Baltimore broke open a close 6-5 game at halftime against the Colorado Favorites and cruised to a 13-6 win.

“It’s great just to represent the area,” Crabs midfielder Peter Smyth, of the Baltimore/Washington D.C. all-star team. “Last year, I had bunch of buddies who came out here and played. They said it was a great time.”

“This is my first tournament with the Crabs, but coming out here, we came out wanting to win,” tournament MVP Jake Fradkin said. “We came through.”

After beating each other up during the high school season in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association or in nonconference play in between the two cities, the Crabs come out to Vail for the Shootout. It’s fun, but there seems to be a legacy to protect.

“This is sweet,” Crabs coach Chris Malone said. “I think when you’ve won it here for the last two years, coming out here for the third time, there’s a little more added pressure. You’ve got the alums who’ve played in the past, who’ve won, and they’re cheering you on. You’ve got the younger kids who are in high school cheering for you now. There’s a lot of pressure. These guys played well all week and really came together as a team.”

For the Favorites, who also played under the appellation of Victorious Secret, it was a tough way to end an otherwise successful week. Having been incorrectly dubbed as castoffs from Team Colorado, which took third Wednesday, the Favorites showed that lacrosse is on the rise in the Centennial State.

“I think Colorado lacrosse has come so far in the past few years,” Favorites coach Jack Giancola said. “I’ve always said our best players can play with their best players any time anywhere. That’s been evidenced this year.”

Lockdown
But when push came to shove, Baltimore won out. The first half ended with Colorado killing off 1:30 of penalty time and the Favorites trailing, 6-5. It was a combination of stellar defense and a great transition game from the Crabs and poor ball-handling by the Favorites that led to a Baltimore landslide in the final 24 minutes.

“I think we played smart,” Malone said. “On the offensive end, we had some possessions (in the first half) we threw away in the first 10-15 seconds of having the ball, and in the second half, we had it for a minute and scored.

“We also started sliding a little different. We were going to make them beat us with their left hand. We didn’t feel like they had too many guys out there in the midfield who could beat us left-handed. I think this helped us.”

Baltimore’s Michael Grossman scored with 8:22 left in the third, and Colorado’s Ryan Link answered three minutes later. From then on, the Crabs took over.

Alex Capretta and Grossman struck to put the Crabs ahead, 9-6. In the fourth, the onslaught continued with Jake Willertz twice, Eric Keppler and Capretta again. The Crabs seemed to capitalize on every small mistake Colorado made.

“It all started with M.J. Leonard in goal and the defense,” Smyth said. “Once we started making stops on defense, we just settled the ball on offense 6-on-6.”

All-stars
Both teams were conglomerations of their high schools back home. Colorado at times looked like Cherry Creek’s varsity team with some players from Regis, Kent Denver and Mullen sprinkled in for good measure.

The Crabs represented the MIAA and the nation’s capital’s best.

“I remember when I was playing it was always fun playing with guys you faced all year,” Malone said. “But as a coach, it’s a different challenge. Now you have a couple guys with different roles. They have to want to do those roles. These guys were willing to do whatever it took.”

While the current Crabs will scatter all over the country to play for college programs, Baltimore will be back in 2009 for an attempt at a four-peat.

“I don’t know if I want that job,” Malone joked.

The Baltimore Lacrosse Club Crabs head to Vail today to defend their 2007 Under 19 Vail Shootout title. Action starts on Sunday with shortened round robin games to determine seeding.
Team Winnipeg (Canada) followed by Midwest Elite and Colorado Select make up the round robin schedule.

Arizona State University head coach Chris Malone (Loyola,  Maryland) will lead the squad this year as a prior business commitment has kept longtime coach Ryan McClernan back east. Coach Malone will be assisted by Mike McComas and a bevy of injured CRABS!

The end of the high school season was not kind to the Crabs this year as several star players are currently injured including the entire starting defense! Joe Bonanni (St.Mary's, OSU), Charlie McComas (Boys'Latin, UNC) and Scott Matthews (St.Pauls, JHU) are down with foot, shoulder, and knee injuries respectively. On offense Steele Stanwick (Loyola,UVA) and Mark Feild ( Boys' Latin Princeton) are out with a broken hand and foot respectively. Ouch!

However the squad is deep with players like Peter Windsor (St.Pauls, St.Marys) and Alex Gottsch (Gilman,Trinity) back on defense as well as new comers Mike Flanagan (GT Prep, Princeton) and Jake Brems (GT Prep, Notre Dame) and Jake Fradken ( St.Pauls, Rutgers).

The offense still packs a wallop with size and speed at the midfield; Jeff Mann ( Dulaney, USNA) and Eric Keppeler (Dulaney, Notre Dame), Mike Rodgers (Dematha,Notre Dame) Alex Capretta (Glen Mill, Princeton) Mike Grossman (Landon, Princeton) Cliff Larkin ( St.Pauls, Princeton) and Matt Lamon ( St.Marys, Towson) just to name a few!

As always playing ball at 8000 feet in the beautiful setting of Vail Colorado, is a great way to end a high school career! The fellowship of the sport is unmatched and while we always root our CRABS on to victory the trip is about much more then competition. The players will get a chance to relax , swim, play golf and whitewater raft as well!

Good luck Crabs!!

Crabs "combo team" 2008 BLC CHAMPIONS
Congrats to our "combo" team for winning the 2008 BLC Invitational! The guys really played hard and came together quickly during the tournament. In what was probably the game of the tournament they upset the #1 seed in the semifinals. The Ct.Chargers Blue squad was a very talented squad with great size and speed. The Crabs played great defense and controled the ball early in the game and thwarted the Chargers few shots with stellar goalie play from Adam Cohen. Jeff Fountain, Wells Stanwick, and John Kaestner led the team in scoring. Jeff Fountain's diving wrap around goal that stuck the inside corner drew gasps from the large crowd on hand! The Chargers weren't going anywhere however as they opened the second half with a 4 goal run that saw the Crabs 3-1 lead evaporate into a 5-3 deficit. However John Kaestner's low to high rip stopped the Chagers cold and the Crabs finished with their own 4 goal run to win this exciting game 7-5. They would go on to the finals to defeat the Harford Renegades, who had upset the Edge from Canada10-9 in OT in their semifinal matchup!

Great job Crabs!

After an early morning wake up for an 8:00am game the 2011 Crabs were on their way to the first tournament of the year. As might be expected, we were a little slow out of the gate in the first half and were in a tight game with a good (and very big) team from South Huntingdon Long Island.  Apparently we should have set our alarms for ½ hour earlier because once we woke up it was all Crabs outscoring Huntington 10-3 in the second half for a 13-7 victory.  Our second matchup was against Next Level from Bethesda.  Next Level is a quality program and put a very good team on the field but once again our depth carried us and we pulled away in the second half to win 10-4.  We finally started strong in our third game and notched an 11-3 victory over the T2 Orange team.  Our tenacious ride provided us multiple scoring opportunities.  We started slowly in our 4th game against Mesa but steady play and our depth carried us to an 11-5 victory.   We won our division and moved to the championship game against the Harford Renegades Gold team.  The Renegades were a sizeable team that went undefeated in the other bracket and we were ready for a hard fought game which is exactly what we got.

Our man down defense and goalie play kept us in the game after an uncharacteristic rash of penalties in the first half.  They scored two quick goals to start the second half but our boys continued playing hard, riding hard and sharing the ball and we got on a bit of a roll and finished strong with a 9-4 victory.

It makes me proud to be associated with a great program like the Crabs.  The sportsmanship, athleticism, and camaraderie displayed this weekend in Downingtown was spectacular.  It always helps when a team is winning but even when we went down early or our opponents were mounting a comeback we never showed signs of individualism. We stayed together as a team and supported each other. The team cookout was great, Coach Tucker’s film session was a nice bonus and the Crab’s cruiser was once again a terrific home base for all of us.  It was a great weekend of lacrosse and friendship. Coach John.

Congrats to the Under 15's who showed some character and really built on something this weekend. After opening with a weak performance the team came back to drop a one goal game then win a one goal game before closing out the event with a 12-6 victory! Keep building on it guys!

(The following is from Greg Bastis's BLOG on INSIDE LACROSSE website - We thought it summed up the MVP tourney well.)

BALTIMORE CRABS vs. COMPETITIVE EDGE
I arrived at the Crabs/Competitive Edge matchup with the score knotted at 4. The Crabs (comprised entirely of 10th graders) had lost by one to Tri-State on Friday evening – a tough first round contest between arguably two of the top teams in the entire tournament. With my up close and personal knowledge of Competitive Edge following the ICON loss, I believed this would be a solid contest all around, pitting the size and speed of the Philly team against the undeniable skill of Baltimore’s best sophomores.

The Crabs did not disappoint, storming out of halftime with four consecutive goals, including a phenomenal one on one effort from St. Paul’s attackman Andrew Chay, to make the score 8-4 within 5 minutes of the whistle. Having just left a game featuring one of the most physically intimidating teams, Tri-State, I was thrilled to watch the Baltimore team in action. Their stick work was unmatched in the tournament field, and I found myself disappointed that they would not be able to reach the final four given their loss to Tri-State the night before.

Competitive Edge closed the gap to 8-5 off a nice finish from midfielder Spence Lussier (Radnor), but the Crabs answered on three straight goals from Quinn Haley (Queen Anne’s), Peter Boyle (St. Mary’s) and Patrick Foster (Boys’ Latin) to end the scoring at 11-5. The Crabs’ victory was truly a testament to the “beautiful game” so often exhibited in the MIAA and surrounding conferences. While, on paper at least, Competitive Edge held advantages in size, speed and age, the Crabs simply outplayed them with superior ball control, teamwork and stick skills. Again, I lamented that they would not get a shot at the title – for the youngest team in the tournament, the Crabs were certainly impressive.

News from the 2009's trip to Denver:

files.LeagueAthletics.com/Images/Club/2762/denverteam.jpg

Out in Denver CO, the 2009 team had a great day going 3-1.
Victories over Dallas select, Kent Denver, and Cherry Creek were followed by a loss to Minnesota Elite in the last game of the day. On Sunday an early game and sloppy play resulted in a loss to a talented Burnaby team from British Columbia. The last game of the day was vs Plano Texas and the '09's quickly jumped on the Texans and stayed on top for the win! The group recieved quite a few kudos from opposing coaches and college scouts for their sportmanship and high level of play!

Adam Cohen (goalie Severn), Chris Costabile (Mid Mt.St.Joe) and John Anderson (LP St. Mary's) were selected to play in the tournament all star game after the Denver Outlaw game on Investco Field home of the Denver Broncos!

Way to Go CRABS!!!

News from the 2010's trip to Rutgers:

Tri-State 5-6

Competitive Edge 9-4

Burning River 10-2

Leading Edge 9-4

Team Icon 10-4

The debate over two consecutive undefeated summers was short lived for the 2010’s as they lost a close one to TriState Black in the MVP opener last friday night. The long ride up was evident in a 1st half full of lost GB’s, careless turnovers and a frantic pace that didn’t work in our favor.  Down 6-3 at one point, the Crabs clawed back in the 2nd half to within 1 and had a opportunity to tie it twice in the closing moments.  However, something positive can always be found in a loss and the youngest team in the tournament (many teams were all rising Seniors) followed up the loss with wins in the remaining four games over some talented teams.  RG Keenan (M, BL) absolutely dominated his competition at the face off and the opponent in 2 or 3 games rarely saw the rock in the 2nd half as RG busted break after break.  The defense was somewhat untested in a couple of games but “extended” very effectively to cause numerous turnovers.  The dual goalie play of Jake Haley (Queen Anne) and Dom Lamolinara (St. Mary's)  was on task and rarely beaten.  There was contribution en masse on the offensive end with some text book fast breaks, effective execution of old faithful “Roadshow” and some knee-buckling drives on the inverted 2’s. The 2010's have a bunch of players attending Blue Chip and Top 205 next! Good Luck!

News from the combo team @ the Cockeysville Invitational:

A combo team of available players competed against Edge Elite (Canada) and Chantilly Knights (Va) on Sunday in Cockeysville MD. The CRABS clearly had an advantage in size, speed and skill over both opponents and won by large margins. However both opposing coaches appreciated our up tempo style and complemented the players on their sportmanship. If you play hard and with class whether in a big win or loss you will always earn the other teams respect. Upper Atlantic tournament net for the U15's and 2011's!
Good Luck.
